Offshore Geophysical Exploration of the Mentawai Seismic Gap
The Earth Observatory of Singapore is partnering with Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) on a research cruise onboard the R/V Roger Revelle to explore the Mentawai seismic gap offshore Sumatra, Indonesia. This research cruise has a blog that you can follow here, and a facebook page.
Assistant Professor Sylvain Barbot will lead the EOS team on board during the acquisition of bathymetric and seismic data in several areas of the Sunda megathrust. Their work will focus mainly on the 2010 Mentawai earthquake rupture, the Mentawai gap of the Sunda megathrust - a segment of the fault that has not ruptured in the past centuries, which is surrounded by recent rupture patches - and the backthrust area between the Mentawai gap and the city of Padang, Western Sumatra.
