Schlumberger makes a software donation to EOS

31 Oct 2013

Schlumberger is "the world’s leading supplier of technology, integrated project management and information solutions to customers working in the oil and gas industry worldwide." The company donated the Earth Observatory of Singapore a license to use Petrel, a powerful platform of 3D and 2D data visualization.

Thanks to this software, EOS plans to integrate various data sets (seismic data, Lidar data, GPR profiles, geological maps, digitized trenches or muon telescope data) in order to understand and model the geometries of subsurface structures, and how such geometries evolve through time. EOS will thus be able to further understand the geometries and slip histories of active faults, in order to constrain local and regional seismic hazard, and even develop 3D models of volcanoes.

All this work will be facilitated by the forthcoming construction of a 3D visualization laboratory at EOS, to examine these datasets and models in stereo.

Petrel is thus invaluable in carrying out EOS research projects and a fantastic tool to teach graduate and undergraduate students. The Earth Observatory of Singapore warmly thanks Schlumberger for this donation.
