Signing of MOU between EOS and Bengkulu University
On 18 September, Assistant Professor Emma Hill and Professor Kerry Sieh visited Bengkulu, West Sumatra, Indonesia, to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between EOS/DES and the Faculty of Mathematics and Sciences at the University of Bengkulu. The MOU emphasizes EOS and the University of Bengkulu's mutual desire for long-term collaborations in scientific research, and to build scientific and knowledge capacity in the region. It is an exciting opportunity to work together on conducting and communicating science that will help people in the region live more safely in the face of natural hazards.
As a first step, EOS is embarking with Bengkulu University faculty member Ashar Lubis on SuMo, a project that will use campaign GPS measurements to better understand seismic hazard along the Sumatran Fault, and that will bring together both Bengkulu University and EOS students to conduct the fieldwork. Ashar was previously a Research Fellow with us at EOS, as a member of the Geodesy Group. Emma Hill stated "It was so great to visit Ashar in his new surroundings, and to feel so welcomed at Bengkulu University. I'm really excited about our upcoming project, and happy that we'll get to continuing collaborating with Ashar." Also during the visit they discussed a hope for future student exchanges between our institutions, and opportunities for Indonesian graduates to come to EOS for their PhD studies.
