Research Fellow (Magmatic volatiles and eruption dynamics)

The Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) and the Asian School of the Environment (ASE) invite applications for a Research Fellow to investigate magmatic volatile budgets and gas transfer prior to the 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo (Philippines). This will involve the study of melt and fluid inclusions in phenocrysts from pumices of the pre-climatic and climatic phases of the eruption. This work will complement an on-going sulfur-isotopic study of melt inclusions from the same samples, and contribute to shedding light on the main source(s) of the volatile phase (in particular sulfur) and how it was transferred to the eruption cloud.
The successful candidate will work in a vibrant scientific department with state-of-the-art labs and a team of international scientists. Candidates with prior experience in magmatic petrology, melt and/or fluid inclusion studies, or experimental studies of volatile solubility are desired. Commencement date is between January-March 2019, the position is for 2 years, and salary will be commensurate with experience.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • The candidate will texturally and geochemically analyze melt and fluid inclusions in various crystal hosts to investigate the characteristics, source, and transfer mechanisms of the magmatic volatile phase.
  • The candidate will be expected to publish the scientific outcomes of this research in high quality, peer-reviewed, international scientific journals.
  • He or she will be involved with PhD student mentoring.
  • He or she will participate in the various volcanology-related education and outreach activities of the EOS-ASE.


  • PhD degree in volcanology, magmatic petrology, ore geology or equivalent.
  • Prior experience in the study of magmatic volatiles.
  • Experience in using geochemical laboratory facilities (e.g. optical microscope with a heating/cooling stage, scanning electron microscope, electron microprobe, laser-ablation ICP-MS, FTIR and/or SIMS).
  • Self-driven, highly motivated, with interest to work with other researchers and scientists (team player) to produce high-quality research.
